Position Announcement
Utah Valley University is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Mechatronics Lab Assistant to support our faculty and students. In this role, you'll play a key part in maintaining and setting up lab equipment, ensuring that students receive hands-on instruction in a safe and effective manner. You'll facilitate and instruct lab courses, helping students master the correct procedures for operating tools and equipment. Your responsibilities will include monitoring safety, assisting with lab tasks and assignments, and maintaining a clean, organized laboratory environment. Additionally, you will manage tool and supplies inventory, prepare and operate manufacturing equipment, renew software licenses, and install engineering design tools. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a dynamic learning environment and support the success of our Mechatronics students.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Teaches labs according to department and college guidelines for six contact hours each Fall and Spring. Trains and supervises students in the use of lab equipment to complete course requirements. Conducts office hours for student questions. Determines and submits student grades for the labs taught.
- Works with Mechatronics Faculty and other lab managers, faculty, and staff in a collegial and professional manner. Maintains or assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies (consumable and non-consumable) used in all Mechatronics lab courses. Determines inventory needs and makes orders and purchases in sufficient quantity. Provides routine and preventative maintenance for laboratory equipment. Diagnoses and repairs equipment and instrument problems or arranges for repairs where necessary. Works with faculty lab coordinator(s) to improve current laboratory experiences and to develop new laboratory experiences. Manages preparation rooms, storage areas, and other designated areas as designated by the department chair. Provides input for laboratory course schedules.
- Manages, supervises, and ensures that all safety standards, procedures, and recommendations pertaining to laboratory experiments, materials, and procedures are adhered to by instructors, student lab assistants, and students. Provides orientation and training on laboratory experiments, materials, and procedures to lab instructors, student lab assistants, and students.
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in a related field to the coursework being taught. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Technology or the following related fields: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Automation, or Manufacturing.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of automated manufacturing facilities and equipment;
- Knowledge of ordering and inventory control of supplies, equipment, and/or services
- Knowledge of print reading and material takeoff
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment protocols and procedures
- Knowledge of electronic and pneumatic actuators, electronic sensors, and PLC-controlled circuits
- Skills in print reading and material takeoff and computer-aided design.
- Skills in the use of automated manufacturing industry tools and equipment
- Skills in using electronic and pneumatic actuators, electronic sensors, PLC circuits, industrial networks, and OSHA regulations
- Skills in computer programming languages (ladder logic, function block, C, C#, C++, FANUC)
- Skills in electric motorized hand tools and equipment
- Skills in preparing and operating manufacturing equipment, including CNC mills, CNC lathes, industrial robotic arms, automated manufacturing setups, computer networks, and integrated component networks
- Sills in troubleshooting procedures
- Effective teaching skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to analyze and solve problems
- Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure, and/or troubleshoot laboratory testing systems and instruments
- Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users
